Beth Randall
What inspired you to get involved?
I began volunteering in 2010 and am currently a volunteer at Corrymeela. Itís always been something Iíve wanted to help out with and Iíve known Corrymeela since I was a kid. I enjoy meeting new people and I felt volunteering would be a path to new places.
What does your volunteering involve?
My volunteering role involves helping keep Corrymeela running with regards to cleaning, helping in the kitchen, helping with groups and carrying out administrative duties.
What skills or qualities are required for your volunteering role?
Patience, hard-work, a sense of humour, lots of energy, emotional intelligence to support others and a deep rooted desire to get to know people.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and what has been your highlight?
I just enjoyed seeing a particular person get the chance to relax. I had been looking after their kid and someone else was talking to them, they were able to cry without being disturbed, it was pretty special. I realized that having the space to feel your emotions is really important.
Why would you encourage others to become a Millennium Volunteer and what advice would you give them?
Everyone is worried about the future and jobs etc but volunteering opens so many doors and teaches you what you will find really important in life. Itís well worth doing and you learn to make a good cuppa which is very useful!
