What inspired you to get involved?
I have a keen interest in the type of people I volunteer with as it is such a specialised group. Volunteering with this group helps me meet people I otherwise might not have.
What does your volunteering involve?
I am a peer leader and lead peer leader which involves running projects, playing games and talking with our young people. We are actively attempt to get our young people in to new activities.
What skills or qualities are required for your volunteering role?
My role requires patience, confidence, compassion and leadership skills. On top of this you need to be encouraging, trustworthy and responsible. Being able to communicate well, having an awareness of your surroundings and the ability to react quickly are all qualities that are also important.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and what has been your highlight?
I enjoy speaking with new young people and parents on a weekly basis and getting to know more about them and what they enjoy doing in their spare time. My highlight has been meeting so many new people and making friends with different leaders involved.
Why would you encourage others to become a Millennium Volunteer and what advice would you give them?
It is such a worthwhile experience. Meeting new people and learning something new on a regular basis is very rewarding. My advise would be to commit fully to volunteering as it is so rewarding for yourself and most importantly to those you are volunteering for.
