Where do you volunteer?
Magherafelt Youth Centre
What inspired you to get involved?
I wanted to make a difference to other young peopleís lives and thought through volunteering I can do this.
What does your volunteering involve?
My volunteering involves many things from helping young people create art pieces into craft room to helping them bake some yummy cookies in the kitchen. I also lead games in the sports hall, such as dodgeball, football and basketball. However, there are times when Iím just simply talking to young people about their day on the sofaís.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and what has been your highlight?
I enjoy volunteering when you are talking to a young person who has not got any friends and when you begin talking to them, they genuinely smile and are so appreciative of you being there. Itís that warm feeling that makes it all worth- while! Highlight: When I was able to persuade a young person to go to the sports hall and play dodgeball (they are always on a games console). Small victories mean the most!
Why would you encourage others to become a Millennium Volunteer and what advice would you give them?
I would encourage others to do this as it is such a worthwhile experience, you get to meet and know people who would not have known if you were not a volunteer. Also, if it feels good when you help to make a young personís day by simply smiling at them, talking to them or helping them draw a picture. I would tell potential volunteers to always preserver and never give up with the more challenging children as when you get through to them that is a big achievement.
