What inspired you to get involved?
I first heard about Volunteer Now in school. I was already a St Johns Ambulance cadet (Abbey Q Divison) and realised I could count this toward my award. I also decided to come more involved with volunteering through my local church.
What does your volunteering involve?
In St Johns Ambulance I attend weekly meetings, first aid training and competitions and first aid cover for duties such as the Belfast marathon and football matches. In my church I help at holiday Bible Club and missions weeks in Cloughmills, Newry and Newtownabbey.
What skills or qualities are required for your volunteering role?
In St Johns Ambulance commitment is necessary to volunteer on a regular basis, as is the ability to make decisions quickly and calmly in an emergency. In church helping with all ages groups meant that flexibility to do whatever is asked was needed, as were public speaking skills and leadership skills.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and what has been your highlight?
I really enjoy going out on duties with St Johns Ambulance, especially marathon duty. In my church I had great fun working alongside the young people.
Why would you encourage others to become a Millennium Volunteer and what advice would you give them?
I have really enjoyed my time volunteering. I have received so much more than I have given. I encourage anyone to get involved with volunteering.
