Name: Emma McGowan
Age: 19
Emma McGowan
What inspired you to get involved?
I always had a keen interest in First Aid and it was very a relevant opportunity in regards to my career path as a nurse. There is a great sense of community in the Order of Malta and the work they do is very helpful, so that inspired me to get involved.
What does your volunteering involve?
My volunteering involves a lot of hands on First Aid work. Therefore I had to complete all my necessary training. I completed my basic First Aid qualification, and then moved on to BFR, CPR and the use of an AED. I attended weekly training and help cover duties. These include helping at public events such as rallies, GAA games and concerts.
What skills or qualities are required for your volunteering role?
To be a volunteer for the Order of Malta you need to be a dedicated, hard working and friendly volunteer. You get back what you give!!
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and what has been your highlight?
The benefit of being a trained First Aider is beneficial in every day living. I get a great amount of personal satisfaction from my volunteering by helping others.
Why would you encourage others to become a Millennium Volunteer and what advice would you give them?
Try and not take on too many voluntary opportunities but select one or two that you are passionate about. But most importantly be yourself, have fun and get involved!!
