Eilis Scallon
What inspired you to get involved?
I've always been very involved in my local community, volunteering as a singer at different local events. Through my Parish I completed my John Paul II award. It was through this award I did my volunteering. After I achieved my Gold award I decided to continue my voluntary work because I really enjoyed it and found it very fulfilling.
What does your volunteering involve?
I sing at mass at my local Chapel. I also Volunteer to do readings an decorate the Chapel for different occasions. I set up and run an Irish club for the juniors at my school. I work with two other seniors to help the young people with their Irish. I ventured to Lourdes to assist other pilgrims by bringing them to places and making it enjoyable. In school I also was part of the cast for ‘Footloose’ which required a lot of voluntary hours. I also volunteer as an Elf at Christmas which great fun meeting all the kids!!
What skills or qualities are required for your volunteering role?
When volunteering for the Irish club I realised how important organisational skills are to volunteering. While at Lourdes I developed my listening and communication skills. Working with different people has really developed my confidence to take on more responsibilities of my own. I have gained a lot of experience in how to manage a classroom and deliver lessons which are skills that will really benefit me in the future.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and what has been your highlight?
I love how through volunteering I have met so many new people. I get to experience new things with people who have different backgrounds and views to my own, which is really interesting. I gain a sense of pride being able to help others who are grateful for it.
