What inspired you to get involved?
I started volunteering in 4th year of secondary school and currently volunteer with SVP –partnership projects/ SERVE. I was inspired to volunteer as I wanted to give a little back to the community after hearing other people’s experiences and stories.
What does your volunteering involve?
My volunteering role involves weekly meetings, dealing with all sorts of organizations and people and co-coordinating and setting up projects. I also have to complete, evaluate and provide feedback on exercises and training, facilitate workshops, design the youth website and contribute to the magazine.
What skills or qualities are required for your volunteering role?
I believe you need communication skills firstly and should have an approachable, friendly attitude in order to fulfill my volunteering role. You also need to be passionate about the cause, have commitment and dedication and most importantly, have a sense of humor and a positive outlook.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and what has been your highlight?
I enjoyed the change and difference you can make and how appreciative people are. My highlight would be meeting inspirational people on a daily basis and how it can influence you and your own attitude.
Why would you encourage others to become a Millennium Volunteer and what advice would you give them?
In today’s society in particular, looking out for others and helping others is essential. Giving an hour or two a week can make a huge difference to someone. My advice would just be to remain realistic and committed as you don’t realize how far something small you do can affect another person.
