Lauren Bradley
About your volunteering
I have volunteered once a week with 174 Trust since September 2011.
What inspired you to get involved?
I am hoping to study social work in university and so volunteered to gain some experience. I also enjoy working with people.
What does your volunteering involve?
Once a week, I work with children aged 11-18 who have mental and physical disabilities, participating in activities that encourage different life skills like independent living.
What skills are required for your volunteering role?
My volunteering involves skills like public speaking, patience for working with challenging children, confidence, clear communication skills and you need to be non-judgmental.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and what has been your highlight?
Working with the young adults can be challenging but extremely rewarding to make a difference to their daily struggles. My highlight is getting an award for 200 hours of volunteering.
Why would you encourage others to become a Millennium Volunteer and what advice would you give them?
It's a very rewarding experience and allows you to gain new skills. People who are thinking about volunteering have to be open to differences and need to be non-judgmental.
