MV for Schools

MV for Schools logoMillennium Volunteers (MV) for Schools is a Northern Ireland-wide programme that has been developed to provide schools and colleges with a tool to promote volunteering to their students, while also recognising the role that their students make to the life of the school and community through volunteering. The programme is backed by the Department of Education and is offered free of charge. MV allows young volunteers to get a certificate recognising their contribution to volunteering after their first 50, 100 and 200 hours of volunteering, with anyone aged between 14 and 25 is eligible to become a Millennium Volunteer. The MV for Schools programme aims to allow the students to complete around 50 hours of volunteering within an academic year to achieve their 'School Award', they can then continue to volunteer to receive the 100 and 200 hour awards the following year.

Many schools who are now MV Delivery Partners realised that they already encourage their students to volunteer but they are not recognised formally for their commitment. Examples of volunteering include: mentoring, befriending programmes, community outreach as well as in house programmes such as drama productions and sports coaching. Schools can also recognise the volunteering that young people undertake outside of school, for example, within their local youth club, Church or sport club. Other students may also take part in volunteering through programme such as COPE, work experience, overseas projects and other schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh award, all of which should be eligible to count toward the MV award.

Volunteer Now provides record books that allow the volunteers to help plan their volunteering and review their achievements and experiences during the placement. The record book also allows them to record the hours as they work towards the 50, 100 and 200 hours milestones. When the volunteer reaches one of these marks, Volunteer Now will then issue them with the corresponding certificate, which allows you the chance to incorporate the presentation of the certificates into any celebration or recognition events you have.

If you would like to register your school as a MV Delivery Partner, all we ask is that you commit to support the young people, ensure the volunteering meets their needs and that it is a positive and rewarding experience. If you would like to know more about Millennium Volunteers or are ready to sign up, then please download and complete a copy of the Expression of Interest form, a member of the Youth Team will then contact you to complete your registration.
